‘A haunting, rising, swooping voice that did wonderful things to my nerve ends ’, says The Guardian about Kelsey Michael’s voice.
Penzance Lullaby - Kelsey’s unique song cycle immerses the listener is an uplifting celebration of the collective experience of life in a salty and windswept place, where the pull of the tides, and comings and goings of freight and fishing boats make the rhythm of the days. Her surefooted vocals move effortlessly from the sweet ballad to the powerful and soulful. Songs include sensually delicious ballad ‘Swimming’, ‘Gry Maritha’ a serenade for the all-weather Scilly Isles supply ship and the breezy uptempo ‘Mounts bay Morning’. This truly contemporary music connects the audience to their own experience of Cornwall through the seasons.
The first half of the evening will present brand new material as the band emerges blinking from lockdown with a rich harvest of new tunes. With influences from Carol King to Kate Bush and Weyes Blood, Kelsey proves a good tune with a great hook and a rip-roaring chorus is never out of fashion.
She is joined by Greg Dyer a sensitive contributor on drums (Kabasa, Radio Rio) and the warm sound of Ben Kypreos on double bass (Trophy husbands, Spacedog).
Kelsey’s career includes live work and recording with The High Llamas, touring with The The, and vocals for Jocelyn Pook’s soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick’s last film ‘Eyes Wide Shut’. She is also an energetic contributor to the community music scene in West Cornwall.
